Which Rock Star Are You?

November 29th 2006 06:18
It is widely believed that Rock stars are desirable, cool, creative, but popular types that some of us fantasize either meeting or being or both, if you will.

Think back to your childhood, who were those types? For me, with my baby booming parents it would have been greats like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Joe Cocker, Elton John, Neil Young, Van Morrison and Jimi Hendrix. I cannot say that I would have ever desired Elton John, but there is one in every crowd.

When I was old enough to think for myself, I discovered other musicians like The Cure, U2, Pearl Jam, Men At Work and Crowded House. Yes a child of the 80’s I was set for some quality taste in music! (j/k)

I grew up playing the clarinet for all of my high school education. I guess I was looking for a bigger recorder, or something else . Seriously, it was a lot of fun being a part of complex sounding concert band. It was very similar to play as the trumpet and we had a lot of the same parts to play, except clarinets are not as loud.

Once drunk at a house party, I started playing somebody’s drum kit. I was told afterward how good I was considering I had never picked up the sticks in my life before that. So, that is definitely my Rock star dream, to be the drummer. Sure I could always join some local community group and busk with a triangle, but it would not have the same finish or respect.

So I have selected some Rock Gods for you to contest with, who would be if your dreams came true?

The Beatles

Cute haircuts, neat suits and a head bang that would make a pigeon jealous, these guys certainly swarmed the world like any insect would. Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Ringo Starr and George Harrison knew about your Hard Day’s Night. Have you noticed similarities today, like with Jet, The Killers and The Strokes? The Beatles are back in different shades, that’s for sure!

The Rolling Stones
Just secretly, my father idolises Mick Jagger. After seeing him perform recently at Telstra Stadium, he talks about him ALL the time. I can understand that, him and Peter Garratt (lead singer of Midnight Oil) have the most unique dance style out there.

Jimi Hendrix
If I was an aspiring guitarist, of course I would be tempted to smash my most prized possession to pieces on stage too. Hell, I would just like to have to gone to Woodstock and party with my parents generation, rather than be in the imitating crowd of the now.

Elvis
Labelled so frequently as a God, Im not too sure if he classifies as Rock as he does as a pop star or folk star. Well known for his knee bending, heartbreaking and Blue Suede shoes who wouldn’t want to be Elvis?

Chill Out Man

November 27th 2006 13:26

If you are into House Music, not the stuff you play in your house silly billy, but that cool, calm, soulful dance music you hear at trendy bendy places. If you are a local to Sydney you will know what I am talking about. It is everywhere, for example, Cargo Bar. That is the most obvious place, but generally it is everywhere.

One of my favourite places for the music at present is at the Hilton’s Zeta Bar. They play classic House music, for the mid to late 20’s or the older one’s too if you like. The other reason I like it, is it does not tamper with any lurking hangovers.

With great inventions like MySpace, yes the music whore that I am, I fell upon Hed Kandi’s website. Now these guys are the masters DJ’s from the UK including greats like Ferry Corsten, DJ Antoine, Funkstar Deluxe and Soul System have created their own record label. I am so jelly I tell you, it is like the pinnacle of chill out music, aside from your Indie/Acoustic type stuff, which is also excellent.

If that is more your cup of tea then I recommend the Coastal Chill. It is largely Australian music, but incorporates just a few international artists to wet your appetite. The nuggets I would vote for include Sigur Rios, Lior and The Breaks-Coop.

Just remember if you like to chill, there is plenty of great music to help you to do it aside from Coldplay!

What tunes do you chill to?

Best Gig Ever

November 24th 2006 14:50
This is probably a really easy question for most of you, but for me the decidedly challenged person I feel that stating this somehow re-ranks my favourites, when they are all Gods in my eyes.

To date, I would say after attending nigh over 30 odd concerts, including festivals in my short life I will have to give it to the great Hip Hop Rockers of the Beastie Boys.
It was truly an excellent concert. Held as a sideshow to last years Big Day Out (i.e. 2005) it was magnificent. I suppose one as I didn’t get to attend that year’s Big Day Out and plus, the location provided a great stance for any viewer. In short, there was no battle for sight, unlike at Big Day Out.

Supported by Scribe, at the Hordern Pavillion, with a surprising lack of attendance, we were free to see the Beastie fans in their jumpsuits intergalacting. The great thing about the concert was the diversity, staging and experience the group brought to the performance. With a DJ like Mix Master Mike, whose mixing was without a word of a lie, perfect. He must have mixed 20 or more vinyls in half a minute. Yes, my jaw was on the ground to. The trio came out in their matching tracksuits, I was impressed.

The best part of the show was when they tricked us all by turning up in the middle of the crowd and created a stage there, so everyone was disoriented. I think this was excellent as the people at the back got a chance to be at the front. This was followed with the switch back to the original stage, revolving around with them all dressed in 80’s wedding suits performing their rock tunes. They seriously looked like a band that would play at a wedding. Please I do not mean to imply any slander, but it was truly a stroke of genius, as their mocking was so convincingly serious!

Tell me of your favourite gigs, concerts and why they were outstanding, if not the best gig ever

Too many peas in an IPod?

The iPod’s a great little gadget don’t you think? It has all these pluses. No batteries, convenient storage of songs, you listen to what you want to, when you want to, colours, iTunes, tuning it in to any radio station and so on.

Please feel free to add any more, as I am yet to buy one. About three years ago I bought this excellent little mp3 player in Hong Kong. JVC branded, it holds up to about 50 songs (all of which were peer to peer acquired, ahem), allows you to record, organise files including its USB abilities, I was pretty stoked. I have been wondering for a while whether to upgrade (because batteries die pretty quick), but I don’t really need to.
