Best Gig Ever
November 24th 2006 14:50
This is probably a really easy question for most of you, but for me the decidedly challenged person I feel that stating this somehow re-ranks my favourites, when they are all Gods in my eyes.
To date, I would say after attending nigh over 30 odd concerts, including festivals in my short life I will have to give it to the great Hip Hop Rockers of the Beastie Boys.
It was truly an excellent concert. Held as a sideshow to last years Big Day Out (i.e. 2005) it was magnificent. I suppose one as I didn’t get to attend that year’s Big Day Out and plus, the location provided a great stance for any viewer. In short, there was no battle for sight, unlike at Big Day Out.
Supported by Scribe, at the Hordern Pavillion, with a surprising lack of attendance, we were free to see the Beastie fans in their jumpsuits intergalacting. The great thing about the concert was the diversity, staging and experience the group brought to the performance. With a DJ like Mix Master Mike, whose mixing was without a word of a lie, perfect. He must have mixed 20 or more vinyls in half a minute. Yes, my jaw was on the ground to. The trio came out in their matching tracksuits, I was impressed.
The best part of the show was when they tricked us all by turning up in the middle of the crowd and created a stage there, so everyone was disoriented. I think this was excellent as the people at the back got a chance to be at the front. This was followed with the switch back to the original stage, revolving around with them all dressed in 80’s wedding suits performing their rock tunes. They seriously looked like a band that would play at a wedding. Please I do not mean to imply any slander, but it was truly a stroke of genius, as their mocking was so convincingly serious!
Tell me of your favourite gigs, concerts and why they were outstanding, if not the best gig ever

Best gig is probably dependent on your age & taste so you can guess my age & tastes from this:
1/ Talking Heads RoundHouse London Jan 78
4 Encores & i think they played on after the lights came up. They were at a stage where they were moving into the more complex Eno stage but still had the early raw excitement. They started the show by coming on & took photos of the crowd with Polaroids then threw the pictures to the crowd.
The support band was Dire Straits.
2/ The Jam Hammersmith Odeon That's Entertainment Tour ( Was it 1980 ?)
On top form with great performance & huge amounts of power.
3/ Lou Reed Charlton Festival May 1974
I'd never seen any one so ill but gave a great performance in retrospect a lot of his show was punk.3 years early
4/ Pink Floyd Wembley Pool 1974
First outing for Wish you were Here Full performance of Dark Side & Echoes as an encore.
It was spellbinding the crowd watched in silence. Goosebumps job.
5 Joy Division Lyceum Ballroom London
Hum this was like watching a very scarry but great movie Curtis was obvoiusly very ill & the performance was crazed & manic. I remember at the end everyone just walked out in silence
