Happy Ho Ho Ho Homebake
December 4th 2006 05:12
Originally labelled ‘Weedstock’, Homebake 2006 was everything I had hoped for from the pinnacle of the year’s Austrlian music talent. I was pleasantly surprised by Wolf & Cub, Macromantics and Infusion.
After a little bit of queue jumping and weather speculation, we made it into this year’s Homebake festival at Sydney’s Domain Park. Post nesting, we positioned ourselves between The Big Top and the Main Stage for most of the day. First stop was the Macromantics, girl power all the way! I don’t know about other festival goers, but I love to start the day with some Aussie Hip Hop.
In hot pursuit of the Main Stage, we headed over to catch up with Little Birdy. We stayed for the whole set, as if you couldn’t when a lead singer like Katy Steele is on. They performed all the songs that fast forwarded their career including Bodies, Come On Come On, Relapse, Losing You and many more.
After catching the electronic excellence of Infusion’s pounding sounds, Wolf & Cub was the next band on the menu. I didn’t realise there were two drummers, as seen in the picture below. It was awesome, they remind a lot of The Music that played at 2004’s Big Day Out.
Holding pit position was the most challenging part of the day. With distractions like horny men and the others that like to pee in the pit, it was well worth it in the end when the Hilltop Hoods and Eskimo Joe performed. Hands down, these were my favourites of the festival. You know that if you’re still enjoying the tunes after torrential rain storms and the previously mentioned challenges, the bands are truly amazing. The mosh was in full swing for the Hoods and quietened down for Eskimo.
Hilltop Hoods rise to fame has been coming for some time now, I am just so happy for them that their position on the lineup finally suits their greatness. They are another great Aussie Hip Hop group, set to kick arse over the world. Eskimo Joe’s new album, Black Fingernails Red Wine is definitely my favourite of all their previous work. I feel they have grown into a true rock band now, with as much potential as predecessors like Jet, Spiderbait, Grinspoon and Something For Kate.
After catching parts of Silverchair and Bjorn Agan (yes, oh yes, Australia’s own ABBA cover band), Something For Kate was elected headline of choice on my list. They are always a pleasure to watch and Paul Densey has this power to cast a spell of fixation over me. If you haven’t yet discovered the greatness of the Kate, then you absolutely must have a listen to their melancholic sound.
Happy Ho Ho Ho Homebake everybody.
Anyone else who went or has been to a Homebake before, please tell me of your experience.
