Ray LaMontagne in Concert
June 3rd 2008 04:09
I was honored to be an audience member at one of the most stirring concerts I ever had the pleasure of attending. The New Hampshire born singer, Ray LaMontagne delivered a harrowing but stirring performance Friday night at West Hampton Beach Perfoming Arts Center New York. This intimate venue was no larger than my high school auditorium. The lights were low and the band quietly entered and exited the stage without engaging the audience in meaningless banter, during the 1 1/2 hour concert, LaMontagne and his band dazzled the sold out audience in a quiet, subdued manner. For his encore, he sang songs from his upcoming album/CD that is due to be released in September.
Lamontagne's voice was something rare, it was a passionate voice...rough and silky, panoramic and intimate, battered and beseiged. By giving the songs plenty of room, he summoned us to hope while never quite shedding a melancholy skin. There were times he took it down to the quietest, all acoustic moments and commanded an aura of silence from the crowd, a powerful statement to captivate the undivided attention of the audience members. Ray was sincere relating to the crowd, his music had intensity and feeling and he seemed to envelope the listener until they saw these special melodies through his inspired eyes. Hearing this unhinged and unadorned performance was captivating....never overly sensitive.....just beautiful.
"We are a distracted people. It can be very difficult to remain engaged in life, to intereact with other human beings. It's hard and that's the challenge really to remain engaged which nobody can understand each other."
